For the first tip in our series we choose checking to see if you have running toilets. This type of maintenance tip will help prevent costly power bills and your water well from running dry. It is recommended that water well owners check at least yearly to make sure that their toilets are not running. A running toilet can run low producing wells dry. This is particularly the case during hot summer months or during heavy drought periods. A Running toilet will also add to the expense of your sewer bills and shorten the lifespan of your pump by keeping it constantly running. A silent toilet leak can waste from five to five hundred gallons of water per day! The ones you can hear will waste much, much more. If you are unsure of how to check for a running toilet the easiest way would be to pick up some food coloring and place a few drops at night into your toilet bowls or your toilet tank before bed. Upon waking check the color in the bowl if it is dramatically lighter or the color is totally gone, or if there is color in the bowl ( if you placed it in the tank) you will know you have an issue and a visit from a plumber is in store. This is just one of the ways to ensure you have a happy and healthy water well system please check back periodically for more water well maintenance tips.
