I was doing some research last night and my son pointed out this cool link on Google. A downloadable activity to make a water well for kids! http://www.education.com/activity/article/dig_a_well/ Very cool visual for kids to see on a small scale how wells look.
My own two kids are fortunate enough to have a dad that works in the well industry (at Northeast Water Wells!) and they have seen wells being drilled, pumps being changed and so many more exciting things to make them understand how a water well and pumping system work. My husband even provided a lesson for our Girl Scout troop last fall, all about wells.
Here are some cool water experiments and crafts to try out with the kids. Some will teach them about water, others are just for fun!
DIY Water Filter – http://pbskids.org/zoom/activities/sci/waterfilter.html – once you have done the activity with your kids post your results on the PBS Kids site!
TLC has some great experiments for water listed here – http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/easy-water-activities-for-kids.htm – I will be trying some of these out with my kids on a rainy day!
Frozen Fun – http://countingcoconuts.blogspot.com/2010/07/frozen-fun.html – Your little ones will have a blast (and stay busy for a while!) trying to get all of the treasures out of this block!
“Fish Tank” – http://www.playingbythebook.net/2010/06/24/fish-feet/ – Kids want a fish tank and you don’t want the mess or the heartache when a fishy dies? Perfect solution right here and the kids will enjoy getting to create their own fish tank!
Boat in a Bottle – http://mycraft-passion.blogspot.com/2008/04/boat-in-bottle.html – Older kids in the house? Check out this activity, it will keep them entertained for a while and the result is something they will be proud to display!
Waterfall Wall – http://www.playingbythebook.net/2010/08/05/waterfall-water-wall/ – Have an old palate or some unused wood hanging around? This is a larger scale project but something that your children and their friends will love to use!
Plastic bottles – http://sunnydaytodaymama.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/science-experiments-with-plastic.html – A whole list of experiments you can do with plastic water bottles. Who doesn’t have at least one of those in their house?! I love the mini lava lamp and will have to make that with my kids.
Do not open water bottle – http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/do-not-open-bottle – A funny water prank to play on your kids. Who can resist a bottle that says do not open?!
Looking for some books to teach kids about water? Here are some good ones, check with your local library to see if they are available!
